In our forth installment we look at the cars of Italy. If you think a list of Italian cars ranked by power vs weight would just be a list of all the latest Ferraris and Lamborghinis... you'd be mostly right. Fortunately there's a lot of other cool cars from the peninsula. Paganis, Maseratis, Alfa Romeos, Lancias, and Abarths mix things things up a little bit.

Some personal takeaways:

-Italian manufacturers apparently don't like to list curb weights, opting instead for the better looking dry weights. Even new cars are difficult, every single source I could find had a different weight figure for the Aventadore and Murcielago.

-Ferraris and Lamborghinis dominate the list, possibly partially because the Fiat hierarchy doesn't let Alfa Romeo/Lancia/Maserati directly rival the prancing horse.

-There's a lot of sports cars from this country, but relatively few hot hatches, sports sedans, or cool utilities.

-One cool thing about Italian sportcars is that their production totals are surprisingly easy to come by, so I've included them whenever I can.

Note: there's probably numerous errors, don't expect this to be a perfect list.

As a bonus here's a cool graph of Ferrari and Lamborghini's power/weight over time

Alfa 4C amid a bunch of classic Ferraris, not bad. Can I make an addition request? Maserati BiTurbo.

The 250GTO having a higher power-to-weight ratio than the 288GTO is curious.

Yeah that's probably a dry weight, curb weight is more like 2094lbs. Also that's 1962 Italian horse power, God only knows what it is by today's measurements.

Looks like the Elemento should be between the Huayra and Zonda R.

I can't believe you didn't mention the Egoista. It really seems totally and 100% legit. Amazing hybrid or electric F1 performance for the street at used Miata prices. I have no fears that this company will just take your money and disappear. They even provide a map so that you can find them, nestled right between Ferrari and Lamborghini.

Pretty sure the f50 ft stomps all these for power to weight with 750hp and 2005lbs and if the zonda r is on that list the f50 gt should be too

Yeah, Ferrari is the among the worst, imo. Due to different options, Ferrari owners have reported different weights for the same model. That's normal. The problem is the weight is nowhere near what listed on the spec sheet. It's misleading. People dog the new Z06 because it weights 3500+ (Porsche 911 Turbo s also weights around the same, btw). Look at the 458 italia. It's like 3450 lbs. The spyder adds more weight over that. And the 458 Speciale? Stripped to the bone, almost literally, with nothing inside, and it still weighs more than a 911 GT3. It's actually close to the weight of the C6 Z06.

As the list above shows, yea, Ferrari isn't alone. But I think they are the worst aggressor because they are a high performance exotic brand and thus very high profile.

Look at the dates. Could be BHP instead of Gross, emissions restrictions, or a combination.

Going from the 365 to the 512. Almost the same power, but 800lbs more weight.

365: 344hp, 2700lbs

512: 340hp (injected) - 360hp (carb), 3500+lbs

The drop is from the Daytona to the 512, the weight figure I've got for the Daytona is sketchy (2600lbs is probably a dry weight) plus a 20hp drop due to going to net no and/or emission reduced hp.

Just to clarify - the Lancia Beta is different than the Lancia Montecarlo/Scorpion. They share the same relationship that the Chevy Citation did to the Pontiac Fiero: same drivetrain moved from front to back.

On that note, the horsepower range for the Beta series varied wildly, from 81 with the early 1300 to 120 from the 2.0 with fuel injection, topping out at 140+ for the supercharged 2.0 Volumex. If you want to split hairs, the Montecarlo-derived Rally 037 version (weight 2579) had 265, later upped to 300, eclipsed by a 2.1 with 325 hp.

Paganis are very much an Italian car. Nobody thinks of the McLaren F1 as a German car because of its bmw engine.

Nice post! F40 C would destroy them all ;) Well, seems officially it had 700hp but Forza had exclusie access to manufacturer data and it's listed as 780hp in the game, on the forums they say 760hp, anyways with 700hp and converting wet weight to lb (2292.81) it is 3.275lb/hp, at 780hp it is 2.9395lb/hp ;)

Please include the Diablo GT!

567hp, 1460-1530kg (Gran Turismo lists it as 1490kg (3284.89lb) which is probably its minimum stock running weight): 5.79lb/hp. Note they say they made 80 (80th anniversary of Lambo) but they really made 83.

And that's just one of many misleading facts, warped stats, and straight up lies that Ferrari has forced about their cars for the last 30 years. They've always had a very cartel/Big Brother-esque way of marketing their vehicles.
